- The Mid North Coast Region comprises an area of 17,218 square kilometres halfway between Sydney and Brisbane.
- It lies between the Great Divide and the east coast.
- Population of around 260,000 people.
- The largest centres are Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.
- A significant indigenous population lives here, principally represented by the local Aboriginal nations of Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti and Birpai.
- The region has a subtropical climate and is known for its waterways, beaches and hinterland of forests and farms. Major industries are farming, logging and tourism.
Local Government Areas
The Mid North Coast is made up of the following Local Government areas:
- Port Macquarie - Hastings. Population is concentrated in the main centres of Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Wauchope. Smaller villages and neighbourhoods are important centres for people who live outside of the main centres.
- Kempsey Shire. Situated in the Macleay Valley. Most of its residents live in the towns of Kempsey, South West Rocks or Crescent Head,
- Coffs Harbour. The City of Coffs Harbour is home to over 78,000 people. One of the fastest growing and dynamic areas within regional NSW. The Coffs Harbour LGA stretches from Sawtell in the south to Red Rock in the north and west to rural hinterland villages including Ulong and Nana Glen.
- Bellingen Shire. The main townships are Bellingen and Urunga with other smaller towns and villages making up the LGA. It is a coastal and rural area with Urunga on the coast through to Dorrigo on the plateau with Bellingen nestled at the foot of Dorrigo mountain. It enjoys a diverse environmental landscape with beaches, rivers, rolling hills and state forests.
- Nambucca Valley. The Nambucca Valley is located on the Mid North Coast of NSW and is nestled between the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. The Shire has two National Parks, eight local nature reserves and 25km of coastline. The main localities of the Shire include Nambucca Heads, Macksville, Bowraville, Valla Beach and Scotts Head with many smaller villages and rural settlements.
- Mid-Coast . There are two main population centres, Taree and Forster-Tuncurry. Rural and coastal centres include Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest, Gloucester, Wingham, Hallidays Point, Harrington and Old Bar.
Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) covers an area of 11,335 square kilometres.
Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, Birpai and Nganyaywana peoples are the traditional custodians of the land.
In 2021 the estimated population was 226,422 residents, and over the decade to 2031, the overall population is projected to increase to 241,184.
The District provides a broad range of public health services through seven public hospitals, and twelve community health centres.

The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute (MNCCI) has facilities at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie Health Campus.
A clinical trial is a scientific study, or an organised test of medicines and new treatment options involving patient and non-patient human volunteers. Clinical trials confirm whether medicines are safe and effective to introduce as new treatments for a particular disease or condition.
The MNCLHD currently has the following cancer clinical trial units:
Oncology Clinical Trials at Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.
